On Monday we went to Avignon~ an hour train ride northwest of Nîmes. Avignon is best known for the Palais des Papes ~the Popes' Palace~ the only other place besides Rome that the Popes have ruled from. From a lookout on top of the city, one can see a snowy mountain in the distance ~ the beginning of the Alps.
